Day 53 of 365

Another sunny day.
  • Low: 21 F
  • High 54 F

Harvested: lettuce & kale

Sent off Baker Creek seed order, also milk kefir grains in a trade for water kefir grains (thanks Kris :)

Dinner salad was lettuce, kale, hard boiled eggs, & grated goat cheese. Only non homestead items were sliced black olives and salad dressing. Yummy!

Used mozzarella whey in a convenience mix for alfredo noodles (instead of the called for water & milk).

  1. My black kale froze out nearly 4 weeks ago. Luckily the seedlings in the basement are now big enough for occasional grazing until temps warm up and I plant them outside.

Drinking LOTs of water kefir juice and (now) tea! Can't wait to try the milk kefir. I hope it does all right in organic ultra-pasteurized milk. I use it for yogurt & buttermilk, so why not kefir? Fingers crossed...

    1. I reckon we've been fortunate then to have any kale at all! I like the Dwarf Siberian, which is very tasty.

The milk kefir is supposed to do well in any type of milk. As far as I know, the only thing ultrapasteurized isn't good for is cheesemaking. The ultra part changes the protein molecule too much.
